    • At Defcon, nearly 650 attendees received a custom Android phone that allows them onto a private cell network called NinjaTel. NinjaTel is a voice/SMS GSM network that can also route calls over wifi. Anyone who joins the network is added to the contact list. “You hereby grant Ninja Tel permission to listen to, read, view and/or record any and all communications sent via the network to which you are a party,” the EULA stated. “Before you get all upset about this, you already know full well that AT&T does this for the NSA. You understand that you have no reasonable expectation of privacy as to any on the Ninja Tel network. You grant Ninja Tel a worldwide, perpetual, assignable, royalty-free license to use any and all recorded or real-time communications sent via the Ninja Tel network to which you are a party. Don’t worry, most of this is for the lulz.”
    • Assisted GPS, a system where the cellular network provides an approximate location and assists in determine a lock for the precise location, is not secure and it would only take one malicious wi-fi network to change the configuration to be allowed to track you, and as these messages are processed using the main processor, could be used to further exploit the phone.
    • SafePay wants to use smartphones to combat online fraud. Planning a tool that will have smartphone users download an app, enters in their billing address and first and last six digits of the credit cards registered. When someone tries to make a purchase at a site that supports SafePay, the user is sent a real-time in-app push notification alerting them to the transaction and providing them 60 seconds to approve or decline the sale.

    • Closed for Business – iOS developer shreds Android, calls it built from the ground up for piracy

    • Affordable Tablet Manufacturers have to change their strategy or find a new market – Archos releases new tablet
    • Apple’s court-ordered requirement to publicly post that Samsung did not copy them has been stayed till October. Apple appealed claiming it did not wish to advertise for its rivals.
    • Apple wants $2.5 billion from Samsung for infringed patents, offers half a cent each for Samsung Patents.
    • Samsung takes off the gloves, claims iPhone wouldn’t exist without Samsung’s technology.
    • Google Handwrite launched for mobile browsers. Enable it in search preferences, and then handwrite your search queries
    • Intel confirms working on porting Jelly Bean to Atom Chips
    • First batch of Nexus Qs sold out one day after launch. And here we thought medicine balls had gone out of fashion.
    • Google Dashboard shows data on your Android devices and which apps have backups stored on Google’s servers. Still cannot delete things.

    • Yaaic (Yet Another Android IRC Client) updates to version 1.0, now with new ICS/JB UI. (Play Link)
    • Thumb Keyboard updated, adds ICS continuous voice recognition, and a one-handed layout. (Play Link)
    • Path receives update, adds movies, books and photo cropping tools. (Play Link)
    • Plume, Twitter client, updated with UI improvements. Offers free and premium versions. Some complaints re slower refreshes in recent versions, but a nice presentation. (Play Link)
    • Plex for Android updated, adds remote control features. (Play Link)
    • InstaWifi offersNFC or QR joining of wifi networks. (Play Link)
      • However, if you can only use QR codes, you can use Barcode Scanner and the online generator.
    • Orange UK launches Travel Angel App, which helps keep track of international roaming. (Play Link)
    • Pushover Teams Up with Ifttt. Pushover is an app for Android that allows web apps, scripts, and a ton of other fancy developer things to plug in to your notification shade on your phone or tablet.  Ifttt (short for ‘If This, Then That’) is a web app that lets you script actions that will be performed when predetermined conditions like new emails, new dropbox files, new RSS feed posts, etc., are met.
