    • New York State Supreme Court strikes down law that makes it a felony to communicate with someone “in a manner likely to cause annoyance or alarm,” claiming it was too vague and overbroad. The defendant in the trial commented to the Verge, and is unrepentant for the crimes he was convicted of that were not struck down, forgery and criminal impersonation.
      • Other states offer much less broad definitions…In New Mexico, “Harassment consists of knowingly pursuing a pattern of conduct that is intended to annoy, seriously alarm or terrorize another person and that serves no lawful purpose. The conduct must be such that it would cause a reasonable person to suffer substantial emotional distress.”

    • Facebook studies to see if email providers are using STARTTLS to deliver email using its notification email logs. Discovers 60 percent of the internet supported it. The study did discover that mismatched certificates, such as when the certificate did not match the hostname, led to delivering the email unencrypted even if the server says it supports the standard, and there is currently no approved method of handling this.
