Show Notes

  • News
    • Android in Newsweek – Google estimates that if they can get just $10 per user per year in ad revenue and revenue from related sales, that could amount to $10 billion dollars if the number of Android phones grows to one billion.
    • The Street reports that Google will enable Paypal payments on its market next month. An announcement could come as early as the Paypal Developer’s Conference on October 26th.

    • Q&A with Andy Rubin
    • 1-800-GOOG-411 to close.
    • Verizon launching 4G LTE(list of initial cities). Deployed to 285 million by 2013. No real devices yet though, but they are coming in the next round.
    • Microsoft Sues Motorola – Visual map of all lawsuits
  • Cool tip for those with Gmail: Add a + and any combinations or words or numbers after your username or dots anywhere in the username. They will all go to your account, but you can create filters, or use them to keep track of spam sources.
  • Adobe Air is now available for Android
  • Some videos from the Big Texas Android BBQ
  • Voice and Video Calls
    • Fring now supports FringOut for one cent a minute calls over any data connection (Install via AppBrain)
    • Skype expanded to all carriers. (Install via AppBrain) Previously exclusive to Verizon, where it was transferred over the call network, using minutes, the new system is limited to Wi-Fi in the United States, but mobile data elsewhere. Some have said it is processor intensive and still has some problems. No video yet.
    • One person has set up a workaround in Skype so that you can use to enable calls over 3G.
    • A Review of Skype on Android
    • Tango (Install via AppBrain) –
  • Vlingo Update – The Vlingo beta is available for Sprint users, but will hopefully come to other networks soon. Once you start the InCar Beta, you can enter handsfree mode, where it will listen for a phrase.

  • Voicemails
  • Firefox for Android has moved from Alpha to Beta. Help them beta test it.
  • Instapaper
    • Instafetch – Free(Install via AppBrain) and Pro version(Install via AppBrain). Pro version requires $1.99/yr or $3.99/lifetime subscription via Paypal…originally because developer was in country that did not accept purchase through market. However, Poland now does, so this model might change. Only Instapaper client that offers a folder sync. This requires pro version, which also adds starring capabilities, full-screen, night mode, wi-fi only for auto-sync,
    • Everpaper (Install via Appbrain) – Good solid app…however, no folder support and asks for gmail credentials.
  • Developer’s Corner
