- From Barry Williams, “On your discussion in episode 10 over a us carrier potentially switching from cdma to gsm and the problems it may cause in Australia Telstra did this a few years ago. They had been running both gsm and cdma with cdma being used mainly by country folk because it offered greater coverage. However when 3g came out they opted to switch cdma users to 3g on the 850mhz band which they branded nextg and converted all their cdma towers to nextg towers and offered increasing incentives to cdma customers to switch to nextg until they eventually turned off cdma it was a major operation and they may of had to completely buy new handsets for the last cdma hold outs but they eventually got there. However that does not mean that customers can use any phone because it has to support the 850mhz band which is not common here, I think it is more common in the US, so pretty much only phones bought from telstra work on nextg which has the largest coverage, other phones will work but they only get coverage in the city.”
